Craig Murray was British ambassador to Uzbekistan from 2002 to 2004. Prior to serving in Tashkent, at 43, he also served in Foreign Office’s posts in Ghana, Lagos, and Warsaw. In February 2005, he left the diplomatic service, with a £315,000 payoff, as a result of his stand on the "conspiracy of silence", and the FCO "double standards" over human rights issues included the British use of information, obtained under torture. His memoirs from the time titled Murder in Samarkand: A British Ambassador’s Controversial Defiance of Tyranny in the War on Terror (Edinburgh: Mainstream Publishing, 2006). The book is being made into a film by Michael Winterbottom, and funded by Paramount and Plan B production company.
